Topic: Trust in Government

Democracy is based on trust. In the early 1990s, President Clinton expressed concern that Americans’ “deficit of trust” in the federal government had dropped to a record low of 21 percent. His concern was rooted in a belief that if Americans’ did not trust their government, the country would become ungovernable.

Fast forward more than 25 years and the concern about lack of trust has returned to the forefront of conversations about the role of government in society. And this concern has become broader, with citizens questioned the very notion of democracy and other civic institutions. This concern has spread to other Western democracies, as well. The annual Edelman Trust Barometer released its results last month showing that trust in government, the media, and other institutions dived last year across the world.

This panel will explore this issue, its various dimensions as they relate to government, and actions being taken or proposed to address it.
