Statement from National Academy of Public Administration President & CEO James-Christian B. Blockwood on the National Day of Mourning for former President Jimmy Carter
“The most recent major civil service reform in U.S. history, the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978, was signed by President Jimmy Carter. The Office of Personnel Management and the Senior Executive Service, in turn, have created a generation of civil service heroes to bring efficiency and accountability to the federal government.
So many committed public servants have been able to make an impact in their communities because of Carter’s leadership and dedication to compassionate governance. Carter believed, as we at the Academy do, that everyday people should be able to count on effective government being there for them, always.
On this National Day of Mourning, I hope President Carter’s memory will inspire everyone across the country to recommit themselves to seeing the good in their fellow Americans and continue the important work of public service.”
