Fellow Highlight: Brenda Donald

Who or what inspired you to enter into public service?

I have always been struck by the power of public institutions to influence the lives of the people they serve - either positively or negatively. In my early career, I was fortunate to serve in a medium-sized city where I had the opportunity to move up the ranks of city administration, from staff assistant to assistant city manager in a few short years. That career pathway allowed me to sample and build skills across the government.

Later, after participating in a year-long fellowship focused on children and families, I was exposed to inspiring leaders who helped me appreciate the impact government agencies have on the day-to-day lives of people, as well as on their long-term futures.

What is your favorite class you have ever taught or took and why?

Some years ago, I was invited to teach a graduate class on Managing Human Services Systems. I was able to draw on my many years of experience in leading complex public agencies to operationalize and contextualize the marriage between public policy and operations. And it was kind of cool to be called "Professor Donald."

What advice would you give to those interested in pursuing public policy or public administration as a career?

I believe public service is a noble calling that can change people’s lives, and I always encourage (and often mentor) young professionals to step up and embrace the mission-driven work of public service.

What area of public policy interests you the most and why?

All aspects that directly affect real people, which is why I love local government the best.

What is your favorite cuisine?

Seafood

Who in your life has been an influential mentor or inspiration for you?

I have been blessed to have had several amazing mentors, some of whom are Fellows!

What was your dream job as a child?

This will age me, but I always loved to write and wanted to be Brenda Starr, reporter (from an old comic strip). Honestly, that’s why my undergraduate degree is in journalism, although I never actually worked as a reporter.
