James L. Perry is an internationally recognized leader in public administration and the study of public management. He joined O'Neill's faculty in 1985 and is Distinguished Professor Emeritus and Chancellor's Professor of Public and Environmental Affairs Emeritus. He is also an affiliate professor of philanthropic studies. Perry's 50 years of scholarship includes expertise in public management, government and civil service reform, national and community service, public service motivation, and performance-related pay. Perry has held faculty appointments at Yonsei University, University of California, Irvine, The University of Hong Kong, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and University of Wisconsin, Madison. Perry is co-editor of Asia Pacific Journal of Public Administration. He is former editor-in-chief of Public Administration Review and Journal of Public Affairs Education. He has authored 10 books and more than 175 articles, including the Handbook of Public Administration, Third Edition (Jossey-Bass, 2015, co-edited with Robert Christensen). His most recent books are Public Service and Good Governance for the Twenty-first Century (Univ. of Pennsylvania Press, 2020) and Managing Organizations to Sustain Passion for Public Service (Cambridge University Press, 2021), which was selected as Best Public Sector Human Resources Book by the Section on Personnel Administration and Labor Relations, ASPA and Best Book by the Public and Nonprofit Division of the Academy of Management .
